On June 16 2026, NEW HERITAGE THEATRE GROUP and HARLEM STAGE produced a landmark full-day cultural celebration in Harlem, honoring the 50th anniversary of the Soweto Uprising (June 16 1976) and the struggle that inspired the musical masterpiece SARAFINA! (1987).

The event, conceptualized and led by New Heritage Theatre in partnership with three of Harlem's most iconic cultural institutions - Abyssinian Baptist Church, Harlem Stage, and Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture - bring together an extraordinary gathering of artists - from Whoopi Goldberg to Leleti Khumalo and Pearl Khwezi - producers, elected officials, diplomats, and 500+ Harlem high school students to honor the young people of Soweto whose courage in 1976 accelerated the end of apartheid and changed the course of history.

The South Africa to Harlem Connection

On June 16, 1976, thousands of students in Soweto, South Africa marched against a government decree that would force them to be educated in Afrikaans — the language of their oppressors. They were unarmed. The police opened fire. More than 175 young people were killed. The uprising sparked unrest throughout South Africa which resulted in thousands of injuries and 575 additional deaths. Their courage shook every conscience on earth and accelerated the global anti-apartheid movement. South Africa now observes June 16 as Youth Day, a national holiday in their honor, every year.

The story of Soweto did not stay in South Africa. In 1986, Duma Ndlovu and New Heritage Theatre Group produced the Woza Afrika! Festival at Lincoln Center — the first South African plays ever presented on an American institutional stage. In 1988, Lincoln Center and NHTG produced Sarafina! on Broadway, written by Mbongeni Ngema with music by Hugh Masekela. The show ran for 597 performances and received five Tony Award nominations and a Grammy nomination. Every night while Nelson Mandela was imprisoned on Robben Island, that cast sang “Bring Him Back Home” from the Broadway stage. The musical tradition of Sarafina! runs in a direct line to Disney's The Lion King, which has been seen by nearly 130 million people worldwide.

In 1990, after 27 years of imprisonment, Nelson Mandela walked free, and later came to Harlem. More than one million people filled the streets to welcome him. Harlem and Soweto have always been part of the same story. June 16, 2026 is where that story comes home.
